Artists celebrate announcement regarding CERB eligibility
Visual artists across Canada appreciate the tremendous work that the Federal Government has done to help our citizens in a time of great need. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented a devastating global crisis, and the government’s swift leadership and response has been remarkable.
For several weeks, we have joined artist unions and associations to advocate for change, and all of us at CARFAC are relieved by the Government’s announcement on February 9th: that self-employed individuals who applied for CERB and would have qualified based on their gross income will not be required to repay the benefit, provided they also met all other eligibility requirements as provided here: www.canada.ca/en/services/benefits/ei/cerb-application.html
Some details on this announcement are available here: www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/news/2021/02/government-of-canada-announces-targeted-interest-rel...
We are sure there will be further information to come. We know that some outstanding issues may still exist, but news on this change in policy will provide a solution, and offer peace of mind, to the majority of artists that we have heard from on this issue. We thank the Government for listening to our concerns and making changes that will assist many artists from coast to coast to coast.

SURPRISE! We've added an extra event in the ARTPRENEUR 2020 lineup: "Community Conversation: How to Make this Sustainable," 7 pm, November 25!
Earlier in April, folks gathered for a community conversation about the work, challenges, and opportunities of community and socially engaged arts through the pandemic. Fast-forward to 8 months later: We now know a lot more about the impacts of COVID-19 on Ottawa’s cultural sector as well as the communities we collaborate with and serve. Artists, cultural workers, and community organizers continue to work very hard to adapt in the ways they can. And the vital role art plays to connect people and communities through this period of crisis is made clear via projects creatively happening in and around public health guidelines. But how can this work be made sustainable? What are our sector’s needs over the coming year?
Join us for a community conversation and brainstorm framed by artist Kseniya Tsoy’s experience through her most recent Neighbourhood Arts Ottawa project as well as knowledge shared throughout this year’s ARTPRENEUR conference: www.eventbrite.ca/e/artpreneur-conference-2020-day-3-tickets-126300240419

Increasing entrepreneurial momentum, wealth and jobs in Ottawa, Canada, through economic development.**Volunteers wanted!**
The brand-new Dandelion Dance™ Arts Connection program is looking for a team of womxn volunteers to drop off weekly Imaginarium Kits to our girls!
Our Imaginarium Kits provide fun, age-appropriate arts activities that girls ages 6-11 can do at home. The Arts Connection program enables girls to go on their very own creative adventure every week for six weeks. The kits are FREE and include all necessary materials.
Our volunteers deliver the kits, connect with our girls, and help them feel excited about the prospect of each week’s creative journey. (Due to COVID-19, volunteers and participants will meet OUTSIDE participant homes. For deliveries to apartments, our volunteers will remain in the lobby or the hallway.)
Volunteers must be available to deliver kits at the same time each week (weekday evening or weekend) for six weeks, at minimum. If the role is a good fit, we continue to match volunteers with new program participants, usually in six-week chunks of time.
COVID-19 has impacted everyone in our community in different ways - but the one thing we all have in common is our need to feel connected to others.

Tag 3 artists who would benefit from attending ARTPRENEUR 2020 for a chance to win a copy of Leverage the Arts Ecosystem to Influence Local Prosperity by Cate Proctor from Proctor Shift Consulting!
Leverage the Arts Ecosystem to Influence Local Prosperity is a handbook that lifts the veil on subtle but highly influential impacts the arts bring to all communities. Insights support arts advocacy and highlight how the arts bind multiple, intersecting sectors and economies, such as: What attracts artists to your community in the first place? How to construct effective partnerships that holistically support artistic, community and business evolution. Identifying arts ecosystem stakeholders and how they intersect. Strategies that guide partnership and publicity efforts, leveraging universal success. Why shared values, advocacy, and communication are fundamental to the process.
Cate Proctor MBA has a career as a senior arts administrator successfully guiding performing arts venues, arts service organizations, arts cooperatives, and festivals in strategic planning, operations, audience development, fundraising, marketing, and governance initiatives. She purposefully advances financial stability, public engagement, and positive organizational cultures that grow both audiences and arts programming.
In 2020, her consulting practice, Proctor Shift Consulting, published Leverage the Arts Ecosystem to Influence Local Prosperity, a handbook that offers holistic strategies and tactics to guide cultivation of local, asset-based partnerships. At its core, this partnership guide advocates for the germ of the creative that drives the ecosystem – the artist.
She co-authored the Arts and Culture Chapter for the Alternative Federal Budget (2020), published by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. She is Vice-President of Arts Consultants Canada, Co-Chair of Mass Culture’s Research Working Group, and Regional Alliance Representative (Ontario East) for ArtsPond’s national DigitalASO project.

403 Forbidden is a digital exhibition that is seeking contributions from artists across all disciplines who are exploring and/or critiquing the way identity and ownership are maintained and negotiated in digital spaces.
As we spend more time online, we become more efficient in critically navigating a domain of blurred boundaries. In this space, we come to realize that the “intellectual property” connected to our 2-dimensional avatars is no longer ours -- forfeited as a result of fine prints and End-User License Agreement that claim ownership of that dimension of our personhood. Here, the Internet sheds its illusion as a democratic entity and becomes a space that is mediated through corporate intervention and the State, who hold sway over which content gets distributed and socialized, and how.
How can we define ownership in a space where concepts like privacy are becoming abstract? How do we claim ownership of our likeness, cognitive property, and creative outputs which are accessible to the virtual public?
Alternatively, how do we mediate the grey area/space of restriction -- through the use of paywalls, copyright laws, takedown notices etc. -- where tools like VPNs are used to circumvent these restrictions? Can these tactics relate to the physical claim of ownership? Can a comparison be drawn between a physical symbol of ownership like the fence and that of the Internet?
