Globally, close to 800,000 people die due to suicide each year, which is about one person every 40 seconds. For every person who dies by suicide in a year, another 280 people think seriously about suicide but do not kill themselves.
Leaves, by photographer Donna Quince, pairs the names of suicide victims, primarily noted celebrities and young people who were bullied because of their difference, with thin, delicate, skeletal leaves.
The pairing shows the incredible fragility of each leaf with its intricate system of veins, echoing the complexity of human relationships.
“The boldness of the words against the fragility of the leaves evokes the sense and power of celebrity and the hidden struggle of mental illness.” Wendy Scanlon
The images in the photographic series, Leaves, were shot with an iPhone 6s using a light table, and edited with Snapseed and Adobe Lightroom.
Donna Quince would like to acknowledge funding support from the Ontario Arts Council, an agency of the Government of Ontario.
