Yasmina Proveyer

Yasmina Proveyer is creating a space in the Ottawa arts community that didn’t previously exist. Since marrying into the music industry in 2012, she has been infusing the local scene with the Latin flavour of her heritage. Born in Cuba, Yasmina’s life took on an international dimension when she took up residence in Beijing to pursue a masters in Chinese opera. She later settled in Canada and embarked upon a career in the not-for-profit sector. However, since marrying husband Miguel de Armas, a Jazz pianist and fellow Cuban, Yasmina has been his number one supporter as well as his manager. She first?came into contact with Arts Network Ottawa when she started producing shows for her husband at the Shenkman Arts Centre in 2013. With her partner, Claudia Balladelli, Yasmina recently founded Axé Worldfest, a creative platform that describes its mandate on its website as “deepen[ing] the appreciation and knowledge of world music through music programs that underscore the diversity of international artists”. Not only does Axé Worldfest present local talents in Ottawa, Yasmina and Claudia assist international acts to perform in Ottawa in order to promote Ottawa as a destination in the international touring circuit. At the moment Yasmina is in the process of producing a tribute to the Buena Vista Social Club, a musical celebration of traditional Cuban music featuring Canada’s finest Cuban musicians led by her husband.
